The plant continued to grow in size and during World War I they produced boots for the military. During the Great Depression, many factories in the United States were closing. The Red Wing Shoe Company still produces boots and shoes, both men and womans, for the Department of Defense.
By the 1960's, the Red Wing Shoe Company had spread throughout North America, South America, and Europe — mostly because of the oil boom. The oil workers needed strong work boots and they not only had to be waterproof but had to resist crude oil. The waterproof Red Wing work boots filled the need.
Although the Red Wing Shoe Company is known primarily for their leather boots intended for heavy work, in recent years the company has expanded its boot and shoe line to include athletic-styled work shoes and footwear designed for specific job applications (such as slip-resistant shoes designed for the service industry and boots ideal for the mining industry that utilize a metatarsal guard). The Red Wing Shoe Company also produces oxford, chukka, hiker, and logger styles, as well as the famous Red Wing work boots.
In addition to manufacturing footwear under their own name, the Red Wing Shoe Company also manufactures shoes under the brand names of Carhartt, Irish Setter Boots, Vasque, and Worx. In 2008, Red Wing Shoes began making shoes under the Red Wing Heritage Lifestyle brand name — drawing design inspiration from the past styles during the company's century-long history.
To expand its reach to an even broader audience of mall shoppers and weekend do-it-yourselfers, Red Wing Shoe Company launched a line this last spring called 'Craftsman by Red Wing' at more than four-hundred Sears, Roebuck and Company stores.
The modern computerized plant in Red Wing, Minnesota mass produces thousands of pairs of work boots a day — the total capacity is now over two-hundred and fifty thousand pair a day. The Red Wing Shoe Company continues to expand their technology using enhanced computer software to drive the automatic boot and shoe machinery. The Red Wing work boots also comply with OSHA requirements for safety shoes and boots and the ASTM F 2413-05 and M I/75 C/75 standards for impact and compression. The Red Wing Shoe Company manufactures many of their styles with steel, non-metallic, and aluminum safety toes. They also offer puncture-resistant and waterproof designs that meet these same standards for Red Wing work boots.
